| Monday, July 2 we kicked off the holiday weekend early with a Q2 session at Wendy Park. Using Whiskey Island as a case study, we pondered the future and how to have vision for creating a future which today's 12 years olds will inherit. We began by discussing Whiskey Island’s past, present and the picture for it’s future. What role do the river & the lake play in the past-present-future continuum? What role has government played? What roles have individuals played in creating this asset of industry, transportation, recreation & nature? Christine Bucknell, Executive Director of The Wendy Park Foundation, gave a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the park and old Coast Guard Station. It was a view of the city not many people have had the opportunity to enjoy. Christine explained that although there will be many stages in developing the future of Wendy Park, the picture for the future is to extend the towpath to Wendy Park, as well as revitalize the Coast Guard Station. She also spoke to some of the projects that the foundation runs at Wendy Park. Projects such as a boat building program for Cleveland’s kids. This program provides an opportunity for the kids who live closest to the lake to enjoy and interact with the lake. The group then enjoyed the evening and asked a few questions of our own. With the help of a few future leaders, our questions, just like the answers - are now " blowin’ in the wind.” |
